Many people can’t seem to develop their quadriceps and the two things responsible for lack of muscular leg development are
1) insufficient overload
2) not enough intensity
3) not enough rest and recovery
A squat is a not just a squat –it is when done with mediocre intensity and it is the most powerful and effective leg building exercise when done with the right overload and intensity
a squat is a leg building exercise only when don’t with the right overload, intensity and rest periods
One of the best quadriceps exercise is the squat and for it to be effective a weight has to be used which allows you to take the set to failure. Taking a set to positive failure ensures the proper intensity needed to build your quadriceps or quads.
Then there is also a relationship with being flexible and muscle mass. When it comes to building quadriceps muscles. The fact is the more relaxed a muscle is at rest the more force it can generate over it's entire range of motion meaning the greater the intensity generated for the quadriceps
Intensity is crucial to developing the quadriceps and overload and taking a set to failure are the primary principles behind generating the right intensity for your quadriceps muscles.
So when training your legs or quads be sure to use a load that is close to 80% of the 1RM . Also try to keep rest periods between sets to 60 seconds to blast the quadriceps and get them growing
This means if you can squat 100lbs for 1 rep you would need 80 lbs. this would give you reps in the 6-8 range taking to failure
next comes muscle recovery and when it comes to muscle recovery for the quads , rest is crucial, so rest 8 hours a day with sleep and try to get power naps in
You also want to train the legs no more than twice a week
Then comes diet, when it comes to developing the quadriceps or quads a diet high in calories is important. Understand that once you have stimulated your leg muscles you need to allow the required time for recovery and give the quadriceps all the calories and nutrients it needs to grow
So for massive legs use squats. Heavy squats are great for overall leg development. Also do squats inside a smith machine with your feet closer than shoulder width apart. This hack squat machine wills also safer and better leg muscle isolation. Try using a stance that has your feet close together.
Another great quadriceps exercise is the heavy leg extensions the machine where you are seated, the pads are on your shins and you straighten or extend your legs which hits the quads hard).
