For the majority of the population exercising too much is not a problem.  Although this is true, there are some people that actually do have this problem.  The majority of people that have this problem are beginners that are trying to make up for neglecting their bodies for long periods of time.  They think that exercising non-stop for years to come can make up for years of neglect to their bodies.  This is a bad idea.  If you are trying to get back into shape you need to understand that workouts are only part of the solution, rest is the other half.

Your exercise program needs to have a healthy balance of hard days and easy days.  If you have an intense workout on Wednesday, you need an easier one on Thursday.  Your body finds it very difficult to handle multiple days of intense workouts in a row.  If you were to do an intense workout on Thursday instead of an easy one, you may not be able to walk for days and feel as stiff as a board.  To go along with this everyone needs at least one day without exercise per week.  On this day you should do no form of it!  In addition to taking at least one day per week off, you also may want to take an easy week every month or two.  Cutbacks such as these can help to motivate you and give your body the break it needs.

When it comes to taking a break from exercise there is no magic formula.  Although there is no solid rule in place you should still feel motivated to get out of bed and go to the gym the next day.  If you are not able to do this than you are doing too much.  Everyone is susceptible to overtraining no matter how fit you are.  The following are some guidelines to keep this from happening:

-    If your resting heart rate is way above what it should be, than you need to rest. Stress from exercising on your heart is a good thing but you can do too much.  If this happens you need to take a day or two off.

-    If when you get out of bed and you fell chronically sore or weak, you are doing too much.  Stay home and find something else to do.

-    If you get chronic colds or infections than you are doing too much.

-    If your sleep is suffering because are not able to relax at night, than you got a problem.  Take off a day or two.

-    If you are not able to concentrate and things that are important than don't exercise.

-    Being irritable, anxious, or depressed is not fun.  If you are feeling this way from exercising too much it is time to take it easy until you feel more stable.

To get the maximum benefits of any fitness program be sure to monitor how much you are doing it, how you feel, and how often you rest.  This will able you to put your best foot forward each time you exercise and obtain optimal results.
